Get Pre-Approved Before You Shop, Not After

The biggest mistake car shoppers make isn't picking the wrong car, it's picking a car before they know what they can actually afford, or what rate they actually qualify for. Getting pre-approved fixes both problems before you ever start looking.

Three Reasons Pre-Approval Changes the Whole Experience

  1. You negotiate from a position of strength. A pre-approved buyer looks a lot like a cash buyer to a salesperson. You’re not there to be sold financing, you already have it. That changes the conversation from “what payment can we get you to” to “what’s your best price.”
  2. You skip the finance-office guessing game. Dealership financing can be convenient, but you won’t know if it’s actually a good rate unless you have something to compare it to. Pre-approval gives you a real number walking in, so you can say yes to a better dealer rate or confidently decline one that isn’t.
  3. You shop with a real budget, not a guess. It’s easy to fall in love with a car that’s a stretch. Knowing your approved amount ahead of time keeps your search realistic and saves you from a payment that doesn’t fit your life.

Common Questions About Pre-Approval

Does pre-approval guarantee my final rate? Pre-approval for a CFCU auto loan does not guarantee the rate offered during the pre-approval process.
Does checking my pre-approval hurt my credit? Checking your pre-approval for a CFCU auto loan does not impact your credit score if it is a prescreened or pre-approved offer based on information from a consumer reporting agency, as allowed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act. This process is typically considered a “soft inquiry,” which does not affect your credit score. However, if you proceed to formally apply for the loan, a “hard inquiry” may be performed, which can impact your credit score.
What if I don’t use my full approved amount? That’s completely fine, your pre-approval is a ceiling, not a target. Finance only what you need.
What if I don’t find a car in time? If your CFCU auto loan pre-approval expires before you find a car, the pre-approval offer will no longer be valid. You will need to reapply for a new pre-approval to continue the process.
